As the tale goes, Nixa earned its name because of its early, singular use as a stopover for travelers. When early settlers met to name the first post office, it was decided that ‘nix’ was a good descriptor, because the community had no primary use other than being a resting point for travelers and traders. It was then decided to add the middle initial of Nicholas A. Inman, an early settler and leader, in honor of his service to the community. In June of 1902, Nixa was incorporated as a village.
Farming was the most prevalent economic activity in Nixa’s early years. A variety of crops and products were produced, including grains, dairy products, fruits – particularly tomatoes – and vegetables. Many of these businesses were hit hard by the Depression and World War II, and ceased operations. In later years, Nixa’s population was spurred by the growth of nearby Springfield and the development of new local highways. Today, Nixa is considered an important location for businesses and a convenient one for residents. Despite the growth in local business, Nixa remains a quiet community. For attractions such as museums, performing arts and upscale dining, locals often take the 15-mile drive into Springfield. Local recreational opportunities are available through Nixa’s Parks and Recreation Department. Nixa City Park and McCauley Park offer playgrounds, open spaces and sports facilities. The community center at McCauley, built in 2002, provides exercise facilities for residents; these include an indoor track, an open gym and a fitness center. |
